• As from January 1st 2005 the Government
introduced new rules regarding electrical work carried out
in dwellings.
• Anyone carrying out electrical work
in homes must now follow the relevant rules contained in
the building regulations.
• These rules were introduced to reduce
the number of deaths, injuries and fires caused by faulty
electrical installations.
• If you intend to have electrical work
carried out in your home and use a registered Part P installer
registered with a government approved scheme, you can proceed
without the need to inform your local authority as these
firms have been authorised to self certify that their work
complies with Building Regulations.
• However if you do not use a registered
firm you must inform your local building authority before
work begins and incur a building control charge.
• If you should decide to use a firm
registered with a competent person scheme, you will have
the option of taking out an insurance backed guarantee for
the work.
• You will have a formal complaints
procedure if you are not happy with the work.
• You will not have to pay Building
Control charges.
• The firm will have been independently
assessed as competent to carry out the necessary works in
compliance with Building Regulations.
